Isabel Rubio, MD, PhD, Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, Spain, discusses the dual focus of cancer surgeons on innovative techniques that enhance patients' quality of life while ensuring these methods demonstrate equivalent or improved oncologic outcomes. In a session on robotic surgery for various cancers, including breast, pancreas, and thyroid, she emphasizes the feasibility and comparable complication rates to traditional open techniques. However, Dr Rubio points out that definitive oncological outcomes are still awaited, as local recurrences may take years to manifest. She also stresses the importance of evaluating cost-effectiveness to ensure optimal patient care, highlighting the critical responsibility of cancer surgeons.
