The demands for police reform in the U.S. were reignited after the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd during the Summer of 2020. Then there were more demands for police reform in January 2023 after the Memphis police killing of Tyre Nichols. Protesters and activists as well as politicians and some journalists demanded change whether Defunding the Police or some kind of reform. This is a complicated problem. Many Americans agree the vast majority of police officers are good and brave heroes who do everything possible to keep our communities safe. And demonizing all cops is not fair. Obviously there are some problem cops out there like Minneapolis and Memphis and other cities where certain police departments must improve. So how does law enforcement make those improvements when necessary. Reporter David Nazar with Sustaining US on PBS traveled to Orange County California and the City of Santa Ana. This is a city that has had many of its own policing problems over the years. Nazar met with Santa Ana Police Chief David Valentin to get a better idea of how cops and community coexist for a better future.
