Exploring Michigan, Menominee State Rec Area, Piers Gorge

The Menominee River State Recreation Area encompasses nearly 10,000 acres of public land along a 17 mile stretch of undeveloped river. This area is co-managed by the States of Wisconsin and Michigan. A beautiful setting for wildlife watching with numerous campgrounds and boat access points along the river cater to wildlife watchers with canoes. The scenic Piers Gorge area of the river contains some of the fastest-moving water in Michigan also offers white water rafting with beautiful scenery. There are spectacular bald eagle viewing opportunities. In addition to the eagles, osprey, common loons, and waterfowl are common sightings. My wife and I LOVED Piers Gorge. First time we'd ever been here and were committed to the 2 mile hike. I sadly didn't get half of it because my camera battery died, but the parts I got recorded still remind me of "most" of the majesty of the place. Three different waterfalls ran through this section of river and gave a calming atmosphere throughout the majority of the hike. The views were stunning and some day I hope to capture them again! The sunset was approaching and the coloration of the trees exploded with the light at our backs. We actually lost our way and ended up taking the harder road back, but it was worth it as the trail wound its way tight against the river.
