While in Scarborough, I also managed to see a Northern Class 170 as 1U52 1248 from Scarborough to Manchester Piccadilly (operated by Transpennine Express) was cancelled due to "a short notice change to the timetable". The Class 170s that Northern operate are ex ScotRail and are also used on the Leeds to York via Harrogate route. Both the SHF to SCA via HUL and LDS to YRK via HGT routes use both Class 158s and Class 170s. The reason why Northern replaced the BTROS (Whiteleys) system on their 170s with the low quality TrainFX system is just in case they operate 170s with Sprinters, which already have the TrainFX system installed. If a 170 fitted with the Bombardier system was operating with a Sprinter fitted with the TrainFX system then the PIS would be switched off as they would both have 2 separate incompatible systems. This is why EMR only do 158+170 combos on ECS movements instead of passenger service. At least SR already have the Bombardier system on both their 158s and 170s, meaning that they're able to operate 158+170 combos, however they can't operate 153+158, 153+170, 156+158 or 156+170 combos, as the 153s and 156s had TrainFX fitted, however the 156s used to have the Bombardier system before being downgraded to TrainFX. 0:00 - 170458 arriving as 1W42 from Sheffield via Hull 0:44 - DMSLW 50458 1:02 - MS 56458 1:56 - DMSL 79458 2:18 - 170458 departs as 1J48 1302 to SHF via HUL calling at SEM (1307), FIL (1317), HUB (1322), BEM (1331), BDT (1340), DRF (1354), BEV (1406), CGM (1412), HUL (1426), BUH (1438), GOO (1454), DON (1521), MHS (1539) and SHF (1548)
