The Morasco Lake is not of natural origin, but artificial. The basin was born after the construction of the Morasco dam, which is located at an altitude of 1,815 meters in the upper part of the Val Formazza. Its waters feed a hydroelectric plant which is located a few tens of meters below. The dam was built in the 1930s by the then Edison company and was intended for the production of electricity to meet the needs of the valley below. The complex is about 500 meters long, 55 meters high and can contain over 17 million cubic meters of water. We are located in the upper part of Val Formazza, along one of the most beautiful stretches of the entire Alpine arc. An area where fir and pine trees master and where there are a myriad of small lakes that make the scenery truly enchanting. The tourist tradition of the valley dates back to the 13th century when, as a typically summer refuge, it was chosen as a permanent home by various groups of shepherds and citizens who decided to settle along the slopes of the valley. The great slopes that you meet are characterized by a typically alpine flora and with different species, some of which are also rare. An area where you find yourself in front of coniferous forests and as you go up in altitude you will encounter plants that have had to adapt to the climate that becomes more rigid. Juniper, glaucous willow, rhododendron are just some examples of local flora. The most sought after species near Lake Morasco are the Calaminta and the Artemisia Glaciale, in addition of course the more famous Edelweiss. As for the fauna, this does not differ much from that present throughout the Alps. There are different varieties of butterflies, both diurnal and nocturnal, and dragonflies. The different waterways of the place are teeming with different species including brown trout, rainbow trout and salmon, while the presence of wild black trout has become decidedly rare. The ptarmigan, so called because it alternates a colored coat during the summer with a white one during the winter, is not difficult to spot as well as the alpine chough and several nocturnal birds of prey such as the tawny owl, the owl and the owl. Hare and marmot are very common but there are just as many interesting species of mammals such as fox, dormouse, badger, squirrel and chamois that prefers snowy peaks.
