A day in León, Castile and León, Spain

On our roadtrip through Western Europe we made a stop for the day in León in Castile and León in northern Spain. León was founded by the romans and has lots of historical and architectural heritage. It is located on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago which gives the town lots of visitors. It was a really warm summer day. After parking in center of town we walked into La Plaza Mayor. The summer heat made us head directly to Restaurant Mama Tere and their outdoor seating for some cold drinks. Calle Ancha is one of the main streets going through the center of town, with lots of boutiques. In the end of if we passed the Palacio de los Guzmanes, a Renaissance building built in the 16th century and today the seat of provincial government of León. León has lots of beautiful old buildings and next-door to Palacio de los Guzmanes we found a modernist building designed by none other than Antoni Gaudí, Casa de los Botines. Built in 1892 and the headquarters of Caja España, a Spanish bank. After walking about town for a few hours we headed to the restaurant area at Plaza San Martín. Before continuing our roadtrip we had to try out some Leonese cuisine. Tabierna Los cazurros offered local tapas and we got some cecina, a cured smoked beef, and a few other specialities. After a delicious meal, and tasty cerverza we got up and walked through town. It was time to leave León for this time, but there’s more to see and experience for our next visit.
