I Almost Quit This Hike (Roy's Peak, NZ)

At 150kg, I set out to climb New Zealand’s Roy’s Peak. More than a hike — it’s a story of struggle, pain, and self-belief. I trained for three weeks to take on this iconic hike in Wanaka. At my current weight, I knew three weeks would never truly be enough to prepare me for Roy’s Peak — but I made the most of the time I had. Every single day, I pushed through my barriers, determined to give everything I had before flying out to New Zealand. This mountain broke me, but it also rebuilt me. Every step felt like it was killing me, and more than once I almost convinced myself to give up. The only thing that stopped me was a phrase I repeated in my head: “If I quit, nothing happens. But if I make it, this becomes a story I’ll remember for the rest of my life.” Climbing Roy’s Peak might be easier for some, but at 150kg and with only three weeks of training, I knew this was never going to be an easy task. Looking back on this journey, I couldn’t be more grateful to myself and to God that I pushed through until the very end. I now have a memory that will last a lifetime, and with it, proof that I overcame something I once thought impossible. To Roy’s Peak, and to all of New Zealand, I will never forget you.
