The Soujanya case refers to the tragic incident involving Soujanya, a 17-year-old second-year Pre-University student at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College in Karnataka. On October 9, 2012, she was found brutally murdered near the Nethravathi River, with her hands tied to a tree using her shawl.  The initial investigation led to the arrest of Santhosh Rao, who was charged with her rape and murder. However, after 11 years of legal proceedings, a Bengaluru Sessions Court acquitted him on June 16, 2023, citing a lack of credible evidence. Throughout the trial, Soujanya’s family maintained that Rao had been wrongfully implicated, alleging flaws in the investigation and asserting that influential figures from Dharmasthala were shielding the actual perpetrators.  The case regained public attention recently due to a viral video by YouTuber Sameer M D, titled “Dharmasthala Soujanya Case,” which has amassed over 18 million views. The video delved into various criminal cases in the Dharmasthala region, focusing on Soujanya’s murder and suggesting patterns of alleged influence in multiple investigations. This led to the Ballari police filing an FIR against Sameer under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. However, on March 12, 2025, the Karnataka High Court granted interim relief to Sameer by staying the FIR, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression.  The case has sparked widespread discussions across Karnataka, with online support for Soujanya’s family surging. Social media platforms have been abuzz with calls for justice, and protests have been organized in the Dakshina Kannada region. Rumors also circulated on social media suggesting that Kannada actor Darshan had extended support to Soujanya’s family.
