Massive sinkhole suddenly opens in Bangkok #sinkhole #bangkok #breakingnews #thailand Onlookers have captured the terrifying moment a road collapsed during morning rush hour on one of Bangkok’s busiest streets. The massive sinkhole opened up in front of Vajira Hospital and police station on the bustling Samsen Road in the Dusit district at around 7:15am local time. Spanning 27 metres wide and nearly 50 metres deep, the sinkhole was reportedly triggered by a “botched” nearby subway construction. Horrifying footage heard locals screaming as concrete plunged below, dragging electricity lines down. Several police cars were dragged into the deep hole, with one truck seen teetering on the edge. Patients at the hospital and residents of nearby buildings were evacuated amid fears that further destruction was imminent. Police confirmed that no one was injured during the incident, but that multiple police vehicles were lost. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt arrived at the scene at 8am, telling local media that recent construction from an underground train may have contributed to the collapse. “Once the road was damaged, debris from the surface poured into the underground construction void, causing the area nearby to fall inside,” he said. “A water pipe was damaged, causing a leak, which contributed to the issue. Nobody was injured, but damage to nearby buildings, including a new police station, is being assessed.” Police Lieutenant General Sayam Boonsom, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the area was undergoing roadworks at the time of the collapse. “A preliminary assessment has found that construction activity may have caused the ground to sink and form a cavity underneath. The ground continued to subside. 'The area is being secured and investigations are ongoing into the cause, with several organisations working to assess the damage and the structural safety of the road,” he said. Authorities have closed the area and are carrying out urgent repairs.
