Silver Creek in Arizona isn’t what most people picture when they think of giant rainbow trout, but this place is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about fisheries in the southwest. We made the trip out during the winter catch-and-release season, when the upper section of the creek opens up and the biggest fish are available. Snow covered the banks, the water was cold and crystal clear, and we had the entire creek to ourselves. Silver Creek is unique. It’s managed alongside an on-site hatchery that grows both rainbow and Apache trout to insane sizes. During the winter months, it’s strictly catch and release. In the summer, portions transition to catch-and-keep. The fish here get big, but they aren’t easy. The fishing was technical and at times frustrating, but we eventually connected with several truly giant rainbow trout. For a fishery that’s easily accessible and beginner-friendly to hike, it produces fish that feel almost out of place in Arizona. It’s no surprise this creek is gaining national attention.
