Bôa “Duvet” live at The Fonda Theatre w/ Rocket - Hollywood, CA - Sept 13, 2024

Last September, we went to Hollywood to see a band called Boa at the historic Fonda Theatre. 00:00 Intro 00:26 About Bôa 01:07 The Jayne Bar 01:34 Rocket "Pipe Dream" 02:53 The Rooftop Bar 03:21 Bôa "Duvet" 06:57 Getting a shirt + thoughts on The Fonda Theatre I threw on my rock n’ roll boots and we hit the road. First we picked up a bite to eat for the drive. You know… health food. Then we were Los Angeles bound. Friday evening traffic was inevitable but we made the best of it. So, Bôa are a band from London, England who formed in the early 1990s. Interestingly, the father of singer, Jasmine, and original guitarist, Steve, is legendary frontman, Paul Rogers, of Free and Bad Company fame. Bôa’s 1998 single, “Duvet,” found an audience in Japan as the opening theme to a popular anime series called Serial Experiments Lain. Over two decades later, that same song experienced a big resurgence on TikTok which led to the band reforming and hitting the road to share their music with new generations of music lovers. We parked next to the Fonda theater, near Paramount Studios. 40 bucks… oof. Our tickets came with access to the Jayne Bar, a side lounge with a run-down haunted mansion living room feel that offers a private photo booth, bathroom and happy hour pricing until the start of the show. We grabbed a drink and took some photos. The bar features a livestream of the show if you don’t feel like watching it with the rest of the humans. We finished our cocktails and wandered into the main part of the theater to see the opening band, Rocket. The floor was already pretty full when they started their set. Rocket was great. They reminded me of some mid-1990s era artists on labels like Matador Records, only tighter and more powerful. Check out their album, “Versions of You” when you have a chance. It’s good stuff. During intermission, I wandered off to explore the theatre’s rooftop bar. It’s a sparse lounge area that has a decent view of Hollywood and downtown LA. There weren’t many people up here but I think the crowd was generally younger at this show so the bars weren’t very busy. Before the headliner started, we checked out the little gift packages that came with our tickets… some breath mints, Fonda buttons and a vintage style postcard. Then, Bôa took the stage. Bôa was fantastic and their live sound was crystal clear, which is somewhat rare for theater venues like this one. No fault to the bands themselves—sometimes the acoustics can just be echoey or boomy. While the crowd trickled out of the theater, those of us who were seeking band merchandise made our way to the back of the line which was winding all the way up to the theater’s second floor. Hanging out in line was a good opportunity to check out some of the Fonda Theater’s hallways and interesting architectural details. Like many old theaters in Hollywood that outlived the golden age of film, the Fonda seems disconnected from its elegant and glamorous beginnings and looks pretty tired. I mentioned the haunted house atmosphere earlier but, really, I don’t think the Fonda has a reputation for being any kind of paranormal hotspot. It just looks like it would, if you know what I mean. After about a half hour, we made it to the merchandise table and picked up a t-shirt. When we got outside, Hollywood Blvd. was still bustling. You can usually count on at least one street vendor serving up insane delicious late night food after a show in LA. It smelled amazing but we skipped it this time and called it a night. Great times, great music. What was the last concert that you attended? Let’s hear about it. #livemusic #boa #duvet #vlog #hollywood #fondatheater #90s
