This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. How we access information has fundamentally changed, but the places that hold information about our history have not. Our collective history is quite literally locked away. Future generations are in danger of losing our understanding of who we are. Kristen Gwinn-Becker is a successful, dynamic and engaging entrepreneur with a unique background. She was the youngest graduate of the University of Maine, received a master’s degree from Trinity College Dublin, studied museum studies at Harvard University, and obtained a doctorate in U.S. history from George Washington University. She is also a skilled computer programmer and database expert. In 2012, Ms. Gwinn-Becker founded HistoryIT by combining her expertise in history and technology to address the growing problem of a lack of public access to historical collections. With the goal of building truly searchable digital archives, HistoryIT combines its software and services solutions to deliver robust digital presentations that are transforming the way the public accesses our collective history. In less than two years, Ms. Gwinn-Becker has grown the company to an industry-leading organization that works with universities, cultural nstitutions and corporations, and employs fifty people across four offices located in the Midwest and East Coast. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
