In this episode of Everyday Mariner, Bart and I head out onto Kootenay Lake in British Columbia with our underwater ROV to explore a remarkable piece of local history. Just off the shore near Proctor lies the site of a 1901 accident where a Canadian Pacific Railway barge carrying railcars sank while crossing the lake. The barge was later recovered — but several of the railcars still remain on the bottom, preserved in the cold water for more than a century. We launch from Kootenay Bay, cross the lake, and send down the ROV to see what’s left of this forgotten part of BC’s transport past. Along the way, we share the story of the Valhalla and CPR Barge No. 15 — and the tragic events of that day in 1901.
