Classic Old Time Radio, Vintage radio shows, the Golden Age of radio, murder, mystery, drama, comedy, sci-fi, westerns. BBC Radio's dramatization of The Fire Engine That Disappeared is based on the fifth book in the acclaimed Martin Beck mystery series by Swedish writers Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. The story begins with a bang, literally, as a Stockholm apartment building under police surveillance explodes, killing three people. Detective Gunvald Larsson, who was on watch, becomes a hero after saving several residents. However, the initial assumption of an accidental gas leak is quickly disproved when a forensics team discovers a firebomb. The case becomes more complex when it's linked to an earlier suicide, where the victim left a note with only two words: "Martin Beck." As Martin Beck and his team investigate, they uncover a tangled web of international smuggling, and a perplexing connection between the apartment fire, the suicide, and a fire engine that mysteriously disappeared on the night of the explosion. The radio drama, like the book, is less a fast-paced thriller and more a detailed police procedural, focusing on the meticulous work of the detectives and providing a nuanced look at the characters' lives and the social issues of 1960s Sweden.
