This video focuses on De Beque Canyon, a true gem of the Western Slope of Colorado. This canyon is located in Mesa County Colorado in between the towns of De Beque (pronounced 'duh-beck') and Grand Junction. The Interstate (I-70) currently makes the drive between these 2 towns a mere 35 from the middle of Grand Junction to the middle of De Beque (just 25 minutes from Palisade). Before the Interstate it was the old US-6 that ran through here, built in 1938. Before Highway 6 it was the railroad, built in 1890. Before the railroad it was the Roan Creek Toll Road, built in 1885. Before that, De Beque Canyon was simply that: a canyon of the Grand River (now known as the Colorado River). The old route from De Beque to the Grand Valley area was a long trek northwest from De Beque up Roan Creek into the Bookcliffs to a connection with the head of Big Salt Wash, then down Salt Wash into the town of Fruita and southeast into Grand Junction. This trip was more than 65 miles and would take 3 days on horseback. Not much attention is paid to this little known canyon outside of Grand Junction, but it is one of the understated geological features of the Western Slope. The canyon walls rise slowly as one travels West on I-70 from De Beque into the canyon, the river winding its way through the sandstone in large meanders and bends. Nearing western end of the canyon at the confluence of Plateau Creek with the Colorado River, the canyon walls tower more than 1000' above the river below. Exiting the mouth of the canyon into the Grand Valley near the town of Palisade, CO, one is greeted with an impressive view of Grand Mesa to the left (East), the valley extending northwest into Utah, the Uncompahgre Plateau straight ahead (South) and Mt. Garfield and the Bookcliffs to the right (north-northeast). De Beque Canyon has many different shades and looks very different throughout the seasons. At the time of this video it is the Spring run-off. The canyon is a vibrant green and the river is high with Rocky Mountain snow melt. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this flight around a lesser known and often passed by area of the Western Slope of Colorado.
