It was unknown this version existed. Although fans are familiar with the original version from the “Invincible” album in 2001, it has been revealed that “Threatened” was originally written in 1980 during the Triumph sessions along with “This Place Hotel/Heartbreak Hotel”, and recorded as far back as 1982 during the Thriller sessions at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos, along with “Thriller” the song, “Starlight”, and various other scary-themed songs at the time. It’s believed that this was made before both “Thriller” and “Starlight”. It was slated to be released as a B-side for “Thriller” in some countries, as well as a promo single for the song with a promotional short film/video. He began working further on this version from July to September of 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos with Joe Kehr. At the last minute, Vincent Price, as well as Lisa Coleman, from The Revolution / Wendy & Lisa, were invited to the studio. While the song runs over 5 minutes, the full-length version is over 8 minutes long, with a instrumental breakdown and a rap from Rod Sterling (sampled from The Twilight Zone) and Vincent Price. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to multiple versions, to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album or single. During one of the sessions for the song, Joe brought in several musicians and friends, half of whom would later make up to be Michael’s backing band ‘The Rag Tag Band’; Sarah Greim, aka Syradelic, for guitar. Jo’Hari “Jo” Payne for bass guitar. E. Phillinganes & Dr. Erkka on keyboards, organs and synthesizers. Dean “Suitorfoot” Moffit Jr. for drums. Barron St. Massey & Eric L. Hayes for the horn arrangements. While they all liked this version, Michael wasn’t completely satisfied with the song by the end of the session due to feeling it might’ve been too aggressive for that point in his career; Quincy also felt it wasn’t strong enough as a single. So ultimately, this version was shelved into the vault. Michael would later on revisit the song for the ‘Invincible’ album in 1999-2001. He had plans for a promotional short film using footage from Thriller & his other unreleased short films to accompany the song, but that unfortunately never was released. //// No copyright infringement intended.
