Milford Sound: New Zealand's Most Iconic Landscape?

In this episode of my South Island road trip series, we take a Milford Sound cruise through Fiordland National Park to see if this famous fiord really lives up to the hype. Known in Te Reo Māori as Piopiotahi, Milford Sound is famous for its towering cliffs, dramatic waterfalls and incredible scenery. Located in the southwest corner of the South Island, the fiord receives some of the highest rainfall in the country, which creates hundreds of waterfalls cascading down the mountains after heavy rain. For this trip we based ourselves in Te Anau, which makes the journey significantly shorter than travelling from Queenstown. Along the spectacular drive to Milford Sound we stopped at several beautiful viewpoints including Eglinton Valley, Lake Gunn, Mirror Lakes, and the start of the Lake Marian Track. In this vlog I share my honest thoughts on whether Milford Sound lived up to the hype, the best stops along the drive, and why Te Anau might be the perfect base for visiting the fiords. We also explore the lakeside town of Te Anau, enjoy some fantastic food (including an amazing dinner at Redcliff Restaurant & Bar), and stay at Fiordland Lakeview Motel and Apartments with beautiful lake views.
