With my HeartMate 3 Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) system, I am not allowed to enter the metal detector or scanning device as this may interfere with the VAD computer controller system. VAD equipment cannot go through x-ray scanners. In addition, the carry-on essential VAD equipment must always remain in my possession at all times as a safety precaution. When going through security checks at airports, I notify the teams that I choose to opt-out of the normal procedure due to my medical devices. I always choose to proceed with the checks in public for more transparency and increased public awareness. Thanks to my loving travel companion and to the TSA and other security teams for their cooperation and support in the process (which takes between 15 to 30mins). Note: The VAD system has been tested and approved for transport on air, train, and ships. The VAD system is compliant with all related FAA safety requirements and will not interfere with aviation electronics, per Section 21, Category M of RTCA document number RTCA/DO-160D, as specified in the 'Use of Portable Electronic Devices Aboard Aircraft' AC number 91/21-1A, Section 7C. www.heartofagiant.org
