On the Edge of Survival: The Story of Salmon in the Yukon

In 2010, I traveled to the village of Tanana, Alaska, located along the shores of the Yukon River. I wanted to learn firsthand about subsistence fishing for salmon in this community. For food, people in Tanana depend on the availability of king and chum salmon. If the salmon disappears, so will the culture and lives of communities along the Yukon River. Eleven years later, people who depend on subsistence fishing are still vulnerable to the declining populations of salmon species.
