In 1996, Academy Award-winning composer Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings) was originally hired to score Ron Howard’s thriller Ransom, starring Mel Gibson. Shore delivered a dark, brooding, and tension-filled soundtrack, leaning into psychological unease and complex orchestration to heighten the film’s suspense. However, at the last minute, the studio decided the score was too moody and unconventional for the action-thriller they wanted. Shore’s work was scrapped and replaced by James Horner, who delivered a more traditional Hollywood thriller score. While Shore’s Ransom score was never officially released, surviving recordings reveal a grittier, more intense vision for the film’s music.
