Acetyl salicylic acid (aspirin) has many desired effects (indications), it also has many side effects (adverse effects). Acetyl salicylic acid is anti-platelet, analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory. Aspirin is eliminated via zero-order elimination (not first-order elimination)...Therefore, constant amount of the drug is being eliminated per unit time, and thereby you get a variable half-life (t 1/2). Indications (clinical uses) of aspirin include myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, antiphosholipid antibody syndrome (APS), Kawasaki disease, rheumatoid arthritis, giant-cell (temporal) arteritis, lone A-Fib (atrial fibrillation),...etc. Side effects of aspirin include tinnitus (ringing in the ear), sensorineural hearing loss, respiratory alkalosis followed by metabolic acidosis (due to lactic acidosis, causing HAGMA),...etc. To diagnose salicylism (salicylate toxicity aka aspirin toxicity), you will need ABG, CBC, CMP, urinalysis, serum glucose level,...etc. Management of aspirin toxicity include gastric decontamination (activated charcoal), IV fluids (Dextrose-5 water or D5W), alkalinization of urine (using sodium bicarbonate or acetazolamide, historically), hemodialysis (last resort). 😍🖼Animated Mnemonics (Picmonic): https://www.picmonic.com/viphookup/me...
