TIME STAMPS/NARRATIVE: 0:00 Intro to three unexpected ways Procreate can help your architectural practice 0:54 Intro to a hybrid system of design where I take a screenshot of Sketchup or Rhino model, import it into Procreate, then design and sketch freehand over the model Using the selection and move tools to pull areas of the plan apart, rotate them, re-combine them, and then go back to freehand designing over the model is much faster for me than going back to the original Rhino model every time there is a minor change I’d like to test. 2:38 Adding color: I also like to create big simple areas of color that help clarify the materials, and maybe just as important, create an emotional connection to the design. Learn more about the brushes I use in the link in the description below. 3:10 Using Procreate to design architectural details, in this case a wall section for the house in the previous example. Here Procreate is again working as a replacement for tracing paper, allowing me to use both freehand sketch technique, and also to use the 2-d drawing assist guide to draft straight lines when needed. Knowing that I can quickly draw, erase and move the parts around allows me to stay focused on the exterior profile where the wall meets the gutter meets the roof, and the relationship of one material to another, so I can be constantly aware of what you’ll see from the inside and outside of the house, and how moisture and rain will be drained or ventilated away from the house. Nothing beats sketching details freehand as you’re forced to think of how the parts will go together, and many of us are able to use a pencil more intuitively than fingers on a keyboard 3:56 An example of simultaneously designing in plan, section and perspective. A lot of times when I start design I’ll begin with the section or an elevation waaaay down on the corner of the page, then work on either a floor plan or a reflected ceiling plan based on that section, then make little perspective sketches off to the side, from one or more angles. I like moving these images around on the page and then adding some color at the end to make them really pop. These little sketches are often a client’s favorite part of the design, and they help those who have trouble visualizing 2-d drawings visualize the relationship of each part to the whole.
