In this battle, the Greek army defeated the invading Persian army But one of the Greek messengers, Pheidippides saw a Persian army ship changing its direction and moving towards Athens, the largest city in Greece. Pheidippides realized that the Persians were trying to claim a false victory by raiding into Athens. Sensing the danger, Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens a distance of 40 km without stopping.
