Why a marathon race is of 42.195 km? Marathon has its history from the Battle of Marathon that took place in 490 BC. In this battle, the Greek army defeated the invading Persian army But one of the Greek messengers, Pheidippides saw a Persian army ship changing its direction and moving towards Athens, the largest city in Greece. Pheidippides realized that the Persians were trying to claim a false victory by raiding into Athens. Sensing the danger, Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens a distance of 40 km without stopping. He discarded his clothes and weapons, to lose as much weight as possible. On reaching the assembly, he collapsed and died from exhaustion but only after delivering the message, uttering the famous words, "Nenikékamen" meaning "We have won" The first Marathon race in 1896 was 40 km and after a few modifications, the current length of 42.195 km was fixed. Reason for choosing 42.195 km, instead of 40km: In the 1908 London Olympics the organizers decided on a course of 26 miles 385 yards from the start at Windsor Castle to the royal entrance to the Royal Box, White City Stadium. This distance was standardized from 1924 onwards. #shorthistory #humanworkhistory #arjitraj #sportshistory #historylovers #marathon #shortstories
