Ken Iverson, MD - UK HealthCare

For more information visit https://ukhealthcare.uky.edu/doctors/.... Transcript: My name is Ken Iverson. I am an assistant professor here at the University of Kentucky in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, and I specialize in pediatric otolaryngology. My dad is actually a physician. He's a family medicine physician. So I saw kind of what medicine was like since a young child, and my dad just really enjoyed what he does. And my brother actually is a general surgeon as well now. So it's just kind of a family thing. It's rewarding just to see children who are struggling to hear or struggling to breathe, just to see them get better. That's rewarding. The other thing is I think they're a great team of surgical sub-specialists that we work with, as well as PICU, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the neonatal intensive care unit. Those folks and those teams, I think we really work well together just to bring care to the children here. I have three kids of my own, and I've had three kids who have had health problems. And I've had a child in the NICU, I've had children having other medical problems, hearing problems. And I think I'm able to relate well to families with what they're going through with their children. And it's something that I hope we can connect with on that level, and just knowing that, hey, I've kind of been where you are sometimes, and I've seen that. And having those experiences, I'm able to better care for your child. I mean, with kids it's pretty easy. I feel like I relate pretty well to children, and just kind of ask them what they're interested in. And once we start going there, then I can always talk about oh, my kids like that, too. And we can develop a rapport in that way. So a lot of the families I see, I have children the same ages. And so we experience the same things. I feel like connecting on that level is important. And I think that helped out quite a bit. I really enjoy cochlear implantation and biomedical hearing device implantation. And that is probably my favorite surgery to do, and just the ability to restore hearing on a child who has lost that hearing, or the ability to have a child hear for the first time when they were born without the ability to hear is just an amazing thing. What a lot of people don't really realize is, especially in the younger ages, when they're unable to hear, they're not as able to develop speech. So you give them that ability to hear-- whether it's for the first time, or if they have heard but maybe their hearing's muffled from having fluid in their ears or wherever the case may be-- you not only give them the ability to hear, but you also allow them to have speech and language development that just really can explode after giving them that opportunity. And just seeing that, and seeing parents just respond to that in their child, is just a very exciting thing. [MUSIC PLAYING]
