If you have been to a bookstore recently, you will tend to see a section for “banned books.” This section is so important because these books often cover diverse perspectives and challenging ideas. The reason we should care so much is because book banning restricts access to information, undermines our right to freedom of speech, and hinders the next generation’s ability to think critically. Follow along as we cover why George Orwell’s infamous 1984 is banned, what it means to be banned, and where. ALA Banned Books Page: https://www.ala.org/bbooks/banned-boo... What gets a book banned: Books usually are challenged to protect others, frequently children, from difficult ideas and information. The top three reasons are: The material was considered to be “Sexually explicit” The material contained “offensive language” The material was “unsuited to any age group” Difference between a challenge or banning A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Most challenges are unsuccessful in becoming a ban What institutions are these bans being enforced on? 54% Public libraries 39% School libraries 5% School 2% Higher education/other The most noteworthy challenge occurred in Jackson County, Florida where it was challenged for its “pro-communist agenda and contained explicit sexual matters.” In recent years, there have been an increased number of challenges on books even being in the thousands across the US. Most challenges do not become bans due to the protection the First Amendment provides. Since the challenges seldom become bannings, it is often not super restricted at the moment, but it is concerning due to the recent rise in challenges and increased fear mongering around these important pieces of literature. Regardless of the reasons it was banned, 1984 is a must read for all age groups as it provides a foundation for questioning how you are being treated: if your rights are being infringed upon, if a government has overstepped their bounds. This book should be allowed for all ages, but a lot of the meaning would likely go beyond that of a child; it should be specifically integrated in a high school curriculum. The reason we should care so much is because book banning restricts access to information, undermines our right to freedom of speech, and hinders the next generation’s ability to think critically. #1984 #bannedbooks #orwellian #georgeorwell #classicliterature
