The pupae hang upside down. With rhythmic pulsations of its body, the butterfly works its way out of the pupal case. The wings are wrapped round the underside of the body. Pink drops of urine are shed from the stomach soon after hatching. Stretching of the wings takes about 8 minutes. Butterflies have no lungs. They breathe through air channels or trachea, which extend through the body. These trachea end at openings called spiracles which lie along the side of the insect body segments. They can be seen on the pupae as large spots. The pupal case also coats the trachea, and during hatching is pulled out of the openings. The proboscis of the butterflies consists of a hollow tube. At the moment of hatching, this tube is still separated into two half-pipes. Shortly after hatching, the two sections are neatly zipped together by constantly rolling them up and down. The lips of many butterflies are quite long. They carry sensory hairs to help choose food. Butterflies of the family Nymphalidae have only 4 legs for walking. The front pair of legs have been adapted to become "cleaning paws" and lie close to the body. © 2013 Botanical Garden of the University of Basel (Switzerland) http://botgarten.unibas.ch
