Timbre: Harmonics in the Human Voice

The timbre, tone color or characteristic quality of the human voice is analyzed by isolating the lowest harmonics during playback. The recording features the open front unrounded vowel “a” (IPA) toned constantly by a male for about 12 seconds. The frequency is not steady; the fundamental harmonic varies constantly between 99 and 101 Hz, while all other harmonics follow it accordingly. Even an experienced singer would have trouble holding a tone at a machine-perfect constant frequency. This type of representation, as it appears left on the screen, is called "spectrogram" and displays frequency vertically, time horizontally, while intensity is given by the colors. The short-term view on the right is called "spectrum" and it shows the same frequencies vertically, while on the horizontal axis are depicted intensities.
