Electricity is pretty convenient, but it's expensive too!!! Here in Nova Scotia we pay over 15 cents a kilowatt hour for power. These kilowatts are a good deal though even at 15 cents. So how do we know how many kilowatts we use? In this video I'll try and explain how the power companies measure the amount of power we use. On your home or building the first thing the incoming power lines get to is your power meter. Then it goes into the building to a distribution panel and from there the various circuits in the building are fed with power and these various power feeds are protected from over current with either fuses or circuit breakers. The power is convenient to use. The trouble is, we don't pay for it till the end of the month. That's when we realize that some of what we used power for may have used a LOT!! One way we can help reduce our power bill is by determining how much power each of our electric utensils use. Here in Nova Scotia we have recently upgraded to Smart Meters. Smart Meters have had a lot of bad press, and I won't get into the pros or cons here. But what I want to do is explain how to read a Smart Meter so you can determine that some of your electrical appliances or utensils may be power hogs. Have a look and I'll try and explain what all the displays on a Smart Meter mean. How you can read your meter to know how many kilowatt hours of power you are using and at any given moment, if you are using a lot of power or not. As always, I sure appreciate you watching and commenting. Let me know in the comments if you have a Smart Meter where you live and how much you pay for a kilowatt of power.
