On my most recent trip to the Azores the blue marlin bite had gone from slow to a grind. So, we decided to use our LP electric reel to deep drop in the hopes of catching a giant Swordfish, which isn't done very much in the Azores. What we ended up getting were a couple of Big eye thresher sharks, which we absolutely ended up releasing back into the deep blue sea. Big Eye Thresher Sharks: The Bigeye Thresher Shark (Alopias superciliosus) is a remarkable predator distinguished by its enormous eyes and characteristic whip-like tail, which can be nearly as long as its body. Physical Characteristics These impressive sharks typically measure 11-13 feet in length and weigh around 350 pounds, though specimens up to 16 feet and 760 pounds have been recorded. Their most distinctive features are their large, upward-looking eyes, which can measure up to 10cm across, adapted for hunting in low-light conditions. Hunting and Behavior Bigeye threshers are unique in their daily vertical migration pattern, spending daylight hours in deep waters (300-500m) and moving to shallower waters at night to hunt[7]. They use their elongated tail fin to stun prey, effectively whipping schools of fish and squid before consuming them. Fishing Tips The best approach to catching bigeye threshers includes: Fish at night when they're most active near the surface Use Cyalume lights as attractants Troll at slow speeds (around 2 knots) Use medium action rods with 30-50 pound mono leaders Prefer natural baits like mackerel, sardines, and squid over artificial lures Consumption Advisory While bigeye threshers can be eaten, there are important considerations: The flesh has a mushy texture and isn't highly regarded These sharks contain elevated mercury levels The EPA cautions against regular consumption, particularly for young children and certain women The meat can be prepared fresh, smoked, dried, or salted, though it's not considered a premium-eating fish
