JOIN BROADCAST PLAZA TODAY, DISCORD'S MEDIA DISCUSSION COMMUNITY — http://bit.ly/S31MA The large majority of a 10pm newscast from the longtime CBS affiliate in Northwest Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma, then-based in Fort Smith and also covering Fayetteville. This was recorded on Thursday, March 16, 1989. At the time, KFSM was owned by The New York Times Company. NYT exited broadcasting in 2007 (as part of that company's gradual selloff of everything but the namesake paper) and sold their stations to Local TV, LLC, who then merged with Tribune in 2013. Nexstar bought Tribune in 2019, but opted to keep their existing operation (KNWA/KFTA) and resold KFSM to current owners TEGNA. KFSM was using Frank Gari's "Great News Package" which began use at an unknown date, but was replaced the following year with Gari's then-new "WFSB News Package" (later renamed "Advantage"). The open was super basic with very little action going on. The name "Newspeople" dates from when they used Tuesday's "News People" theme and image campaign earlier in the 80s. The current "5 News" brand was implemented the following year. Anchored by Kevin Bowman (now at KFOR in Oklahoma City where he uses his real last name, Ogle), weather from meteorologist Cory Barron (later worked in St. Louis and now works in higher education), and sports from Ken Huge (later became a general manager for several shopping malls and is now retired). Includes reports from Anna Lux, Brian Shipman (now a professor at Drury University), Galen Culver (now at KFOR), Willie O'Stevens (from B98 Radio, which as a small-market iHeart station now employs zero local talent), and Mike Irwin (now at rival stations KNWA/KFTA). 0:00 - Channel intro 0:05 - CBS network ID 0:08 - "The Newspeople" pre-show tease 0:39 - Kraft Side Dishes 1:09 - Pontiac 1:39 - News A-block 6:19 - First America Federal Savings Bank (Ed Hopkins VO) 6:49 - Sonic (feat.
