Supernova Review

Here I take a look at the Supernova, the latest and greatest addition to the Clans for PGI’s MechWarrior Online. The Supernova is the precursor to the Nova, according to the BattleTech Lore...a fact I find rather interesting because a Supernova is a bigger, more energetic and generally more destructive Nova when talking about stars...which is exactly what the Supernova is not here. Don't get me wrong, the Supernova looks to be a decent mech...kinda. Maybe. I mean, look, it's on par with other 90-ton mechs in size/scale, but it's got the speed of a Direwolf. On its own, this isn't necessarily terrible, but it has nowhere near the firepower (and, looking at the quirks so far, durability to make up for lack of speed). The Supernova 1, unfortunately is not very impressive out the gate; it has 8 energy hardpoints, and all of them are on the arms. I personally don't care for designs that have all arm-mounted weapons simply because in many cases, it is frighteningly easy to lose the arms, and thus be rendered useless. I mean, if 2 of the energy hardpoints were on a torso or head, then losing the arms wouldn't necessarily be an outright death sentence ...oh well... The other variants (3, A and Boiler) have a bit more going for them, both in hardpoint layout as well as variety. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with laser vomit per se... but that is the norm and it does get a bit old after awhile. In any event, I will disagree with some of the folks on the MWO and Steam Forums who say that the Supernova is DOA. While it certainly is not in the realm of 'meta', I think it can have a place on the battlefield. I will be clear however in stating that this chassis will not be for everyone.
