One of the best rocking gnaoui around and a true showman, this 24 minute track shows Maalem Omar Hyat at his best. Recorded on Sunday night, at the closing concert of the Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival 2012. In past years I've seen Omar Hyat do fusion really well, with a lot of different musicians, but here, he's just backed by his acrobatic troup of dancers, singers, drummers, and of course, flag carriers. His woman singer with the haunting chant is missing this year, unfortunately. This number shows you what an Essaouira concert is all about: wonderful music, great dancing, excellent dialogue between the artists and the audience, sometimes ecstatic dancing in the crowd, call and response, rising pace, and a multi-racial crowd of all ages having a great time without the benefit of alcohol and no obvious signs of drug-taking.
