The most famous version was released in 1965 by The Mamas & the Papas, who had previously provided backing vocals on McGuire’s recording. Written during a cold New York City winter in 1963, the song captures the Phillips’ longing for California’s warmth and sunshine. Though it began as a folk-style composition, it was later re-recorded with Denny Doherty on lead vocals, helping define the group’s signature sound. Initially slow to gain traction, the song became a nationwide hit after receiving heavy airplay on Boston radio, eventually reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. It was also a major hit in the UK and later re-charted in 1997 following its use in a commercial. A defining symbol of the California Sound and the 1960s counterculture era, “California Dreamin’” was certified Gold in 1966, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, and ranked No. 420 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list in 2021. ——————————————————————————————————————————— 🎶 Lyrics Full lyrics are available in the pinned comment below 👇 ——————————————————————————————————————————— 💬 Join the Conversation Does this song feel more like a folk tune or a classic pop hit to you? ——————————————————————————————————————————— 🔥 Hashtags #themamasandthepapas #californiadreamin #californiadreaming #planetguitar #guitarplayalong #chordchart #intermediateguitar #capo4 #60smusic #classicrock #guitarwithlyrics #guitarchords #guitartutorial #learnguitar #playalongguitar #acousticguitar #guitarpractice #strummingpattern #onscreenchords #60sguitarsongs
