The flights of stone steps, consisting of various levels and three separate major sections, were built in 1922 by former miners who constructed the stairs using rock from the surrounding area. In the Depression years, the City of Johannesburg’s City Engineer, E H Waugh developed a public works program to employ and train unemployed men to cut stones, heave them up or down the hill and cement them into place to create a public path. Current Iconic Era Situated in one of Joburg’s most affluent old suburbs, the Westcliff steps, dubbed the “stairway to heaven” consist of 210 steps in total that climb up the steep Westcliff Ridge. Walkers strapped with heavy backpacks are a common sight on the stairs, as they serve as a popular training ground for hikers preparing for backpacking trails, from Drakensberg and Cederberg traverses, to Kilimanjaro. Once at the top of the stairs, visitors are rewarded with a vast view over the Northern suburbs of Johannesburg. #westcliff #stairs #hiking #relaxing
