Longshaw National Trust Estate with its three waymarked trails is a great place to enjoy a walk in the country. Located in the Peak District National Park in England south of the city of Sheffield it is surrounded by the picturesque scenery of the moorland. At the start of the walk we passed by a poignant photograph mounted on a display board. Titled “Longshaw Remembers…. Caring for the wounded soldiers of the Great War “. The photograph shows soldiers and nurses on a horse drawn sleigh with the ground covered in snow. Prompted by this picture I thought of the various occupants of these grounds from the Estates beginnings to today. A Brief History The house and grounds were once the shooting estate of the Duke of Rutland. The lodge was added about 1827 as a retreat for shooting guests, including King George V and the Duke of Wellington. In the Great War it became a home for convalescing solders, the single picture on our walk being the only remaining memory of the solders who passed through here. For the most part their stories lost in history. In 1931 the City of Sheffield purchased the property but not long after it was donated to the National Trust who split the property into private use, the house is now private flats and public use, the estate is open to public for walking and other recreational activities.
