Randolph Martin, MD, and Richard Whitlock, MD, discuss the AtriCure LeAAPS (Left Atrial Appendage Exclusion for Prophylactic Stroke Reduction Trial) trial which Dr. Whitlock believes will answer whether left atrial appendage occlusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery for another indication is safe and effective for stroke prevention. The trial will randomize 6,500 patients in 250 centers around the world who are undergoing surgery via sternotomy. Dr. Whitlock adds that this robust data will allow for a new level of confidence in this treatment – possibly resulting in prevention of tens of thousands of strokes around the world. Richard Whitlock, MD Research Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery and a Professor of Surgery at McMaster University Medical School Randolph P. The meeting featured more than 350 presentations, 40 focused breakout or lunch sessions, combined with four main plenary sessions – with over 900 attendees from 52 countries.
