Satopant lake is located at an altitude of 15,100 feet in the midst of Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and swargarohini peaks in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal region. This beautiful lake is also considered sacred by Hindus and many locals come here to immerse ashes of the dead. The name Satopant is derived from two words “true” and “path”. There are several legends about this place which is why it’s revered by Hindus. One of them is that the path leads to the gateway to the mythical heaven and Pandavas from Mahabharat were the first to take this journey. Only Yudhisthir is said to have completed the journey while the rest perished on the way. However due to its remoteness and the slightly difficult nature of the trek the trail is usually quiet. The trek typically takes 4-5 days and starts from Mana village near Badrinath. Indians as well as foreigners are required to get an inner line permit for this trek due to its proximity to the Indo-China border.
