The church of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli is one of the oldest in Venice: it is assumed that a first building already existed in the seventh century. The building from the 7th century was replaced by the current church from the 13th century, with a Romanesque basilica plan with three naves. Near the portico stands the massive bell tower, in Venetian-Byzantine style, from the end of the 12th century. Separated from the presbytery by the Byzantine iconostasis, the nave is covered with wooden decorations, gilded sculptures, canvases, statues and ornamental motifs: the whole produces a beautiful effect that was taken up by the Carmini church. In the nave, on both sides, you can admire a series of beautiful paintings illustrating scenes from the life of Christ, works by Alvise dal Friso and Jacopo Palma the younger. The ceiling is flat, divided into panels, in the medallion of San Nicola in Glory by Francesco Montemezzano of the sixteenth century. On the main altar, a large niche houses San Nicolo 'blessing, a gilded wooden statue, a massive Gothic sculpture from the school of Bartolomeo Bon (mid-15th century).
