Oral surgeons can put patients to sleep for any dental and/or oral surgery. In this video Doctor Dmitry Tsvetov explains the pros and cons of different anesthesia types. He offers a comprehensive guide to the different anesthesia options available for oral surgery, aimed at helping patients make informed choices for their procedures. Dr. Tsvetov begins by outlining five main types of anesthesia commonly used in oral surgery: local anesthesia, nitrous oxide (or laughing gas), oral sedation, intravenous (IV) sedation (also known as twilight anesthesia), and general anesthesia. Each option is explained in detail to clarify the benefits, limitations, and specific scenarios where it might be most effective. Dr. Tsvetov first explains local anesthesia, a straightforward option where the targeted area is numbed with local anesthetics, making it ideal for single-tooth extractions, wisdom tooth extractions, and implants. While effective for pain control, patients remain fully aware, feeling pressure and movement during the procedure. He notes that while local anesthesia is cost-effective and requires no fasting, patients who are sensitive to sensations may find it unsettling. The second option, nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas), provides a mild sedative effect, helping to relax patients and offer light pain relief. Dr. Tsvetov explains that nitrous oxide is quick to take effect, has minimal recovery time, and doesn’t require a driver, making it a convenient choice. However, he points out that it may not be potent enough for everyone and is only effective if the patient can breathe comfortably through their nose, which may be challenging for those with nasal blockages. Oral sedation, the third option, involves taking a sedative pill about an hour before the procedure. Dr. Tsvetov describes how this method is useful for easing anxiety and offering a bit of memory loss around the procedure. It’s especially popular for children and for patients who may need a slightly deeper level of relaxation. However, the effects of oral sedation vary from person to person depending on individual digestive processing times, meaning patients need to wait while the sedation takes effect. Dr. Tsvetov emphasizes the importance of monitoring the dosage to avoid the risk of over-sedation. The fourth option, intravenous sedation (IV sedation), allows medications to be administered directly into the bloodstream through an IV, resulting in faster, more controlled sedation. Dr. Tsvetov explains that IV sedation is ideal for patients who prefer to be “asleep” during the procedure and avoid sensations of pressure or movement. While IV sedation requires fasting and a longer recovery period, it allows patients to sleep comfortably through shorter surgeries. However, patients with airway or anatomical considerations may not be ideal candidates due to the potential for airway collapse during sedation. Dr. Tsvetov then describes the fifth and most intensive option: general anesthesia. Reserved for longer or more complex procedures, general anesthesia requires intubation and a dedicated anesthesiologist to monitor the patient. With this method, patients are fully asleep, making it suitable for those who might not be ideal candidates for IV sedation due to airway or breathing issues. Although general anesthesia is often the most expensive option and comes with additional recovery time, Dr. Tsvetov highlights that it offers the deepest level of sedation, making it possible for nearly everyone to undergo surgery comfortably. Throughout the video, Dr. Tsvetov emphasizes that each option has unique advantages and potential drawbacks, such as cost, duration, and the need for post-procedure assistance or recovery time. His goal is to provide patients with a thorough understanding of what each anesthesia option involves, including potential side effects, safety considerations, and overall experience. For those considering oral surgery, Dr. Tsvetov invites viewers to reach out for a consultation, where they can discuss the best anesthesia choice for their unique needs and comfort level.
