16 November 1532 was one of the most dramatic dates in the history of the conquest of the New World: In Cajamarca, Francisco de Pizarro, with just 180 men, defeated the great Inca emperor Atahualpa and his army of over 30,000 warriors. Who was this man who brought the powerful empire of the princes of gold to its knees? What drove him to pioneer his way to the elevated plains of the Andes, and with a force of just a few men, take on the powerful Inca army? Francisco Pizarro, born 1476 and brought up by relatives, worked as a swineherd. He received no education and remained illiterate until his death. The young Pizarro was not content to accept his wretched lot, he wanted his share of fame and fortune, of Oro and Gloria. After moving to Seville and completing several voyages of discovery, Pizarro ultimately set sail from Panama in 1531 with 3 ships and 180 men with the task of conquering Peru in the name of the Spanish crown. Pizarro's unerring thirst for success and fame took him on an arduous march to the elevated plains of the Andes, the heartland of the Incas. With 180 men he drew the Incas into a trap in the Inca city of Atahualpa and annihilated them. But his amazing victory over the huge Inca army may not have been due to strategic brilliance, but rather luck. From Spain, the journey takes us via Santo Domingo, to Panama and Peru, and into the heart of Inca country. The film tells the story of a poor and uneducated swineherd from Estremadura who defied the injustice of his fate and until his dying day unerringly and mercilessly pursued his only goal: Oro et Gloria.
