Smelting Iron From Rocks (Bloomery Iron)

Part of the "Swords from Stones" project at Chalke History Festival where we attempt to smelt iron in a field in Wiltshire while only using Iron Age technology. While we wanted to show how labour intensive it was to produce iron during the Iron Age in Britain, a key focus was to demonstrate the community aspect of this process. The vast majority of the team had never met each other before but, over the course of the week, built a great camaraderie through the building of the furnace, the processing of the ore and the shared labour of the smelt. It was a great pleasure to witness and be involved with such a team and now, we get to share a small part of that with you all.
