he Mekelle Blind School in Tigray, Ethiopia is a special school for visually impaired children. It was founded in 1991, and works for the well-being and development of visually impaired children. The school has around 100 residents and provides elementary level education (Grades 1-4). The children are provided with meals, medical attention and clothing. Education beyond grade five is provided by local (outreach) schools with limited support for visually impaired pupils. Cultivaid, SENTigray, and Engineers Without Borders - Mekelle have been working together at the school since 2014, focusing on increasing agricultural income of the school and providing the students with a more nutritious diet. A nutrition sensitive agricultural program at the School has improved the nutrition of the students through agricultural activities. Students are consuming carrots, sweet potatoes and green leafy vegetables on an almost daily basis. The improved diets at the school provides a model for school garden programs to be expanded to additional schools.
