National Grid Slumps to 3,000MW as Nigerians Face Worsening Power Outages

Nigeria’s electricity crisis has worsened, with national power generation plunging to about 3,000 megawatts, far below the country’s installed capacity of over 13,000MW. The sharp drop comes despite recent tariff increases for Band A and B customers and repeated assurances of improved supply. The Nigerian Independent System Operator linked the collapse to an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos gas pipeline, disrupting gas supply to power plants. Data shows generation fell as low as 2,652MW, with Abuja, Ikeja and Eko DisCos receiving the highest allocations. This development raises fresh questions about grid resilience, energy infrastructure, and whether higher tariffs are delivering better electricity for consumers.
