Overview of Bodrum Location: Bodrum is a town and district located in Muğla Province, Turkey, situated at the entrance to the Gulf of Gökova. Population: As of 2023, the population of Bodrum is approximately 198,335 people. Area: The district covers an area of 650 km². History Ancient Era: Originally known as Halicarnassus, Bodrum was founded by Dorian Greeks. It was later under Persian rule and became the capital of the satrapy of Caria. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was built here for Mausolus. Hellenistic and Roman Periods: After Alexander the Great's conquest in 334 BC, the city passed through various Hellenistic rulers before coming under Roman rule in 129 BC. Medieval Era: The Knights Hospitaller arrived in 1402 and built Bodrum Castle using remains of the Mausoleum. The town fell under Ottoman control in 1522. Modern Era: Until the 20th century, Bodrum's economy was based on fishing and sponge diving. Tourism became the main industry in the late 20th century. Geography and Climate Climate: Bodrum has a hot summer Mediterranean climate with mild winters and very hot summers. The average temperature ranges from 15°C in winter to 34°C in summer. Geography: The town is known for its scenic coastline and historical sites like Bodrum Castle and the ruins of the Mausoleum. Main Sights Bodrum Castle: Built by the Knights Hospitaller, it houses the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Mausoleum at Halicarnassus: Ruins of the ancient tomb, a former wonder of the world. Zeki Müren Art Museum: Dedicated to the Turkish musician Zeki Müren. Economy and Infrastructure Economy: Tourism is the primary industry, with significant contributions from retail and services. Infrastructure: The town is served by Milas–Bodrum Airport and has ferry connections to nearby islands like Kos.
