You can accomplish these two objectives by simply walking outdoors. A daily brisk walk can decrease or maintain weight, lower blood pressure, improve heart health, strengthen bones and muscles, enhance balance and coordination and reduce symptoms associated with depression and anxiety, according to the Mayo Clinic. Swinging your arms vigorously while walking will add to these benefits. For many of us, starting a new habit, such as a daily walk, is hard to do. I have found that walking in a natural setting while listening to my favorite rhythmic music (English country dance tunes) has helped me to establish a habit. The music keeps me walking at a consistent, mildly aerobic pace and the natural environment uplifts my spirits. All this makes the experience much more enjoyable, which, in turn, helps me sustain the habit. Rather than being a chore, the exercise becomes an anticipated treat, a break from the boredom of stay-at-home routines. As many ECD tunes are played at an aerobic walking tempo (110-120 bpm), walking on the beat encourages a consistent brisk pace and requires concentration and coordination. It may even improve your dancing skills. Listening to cheerful ECD tunes chases away the cares of the day, replacing them with happier thoughts and feelings. It's also a way of getting more enjoyment from your ECD musical collection and developing a deeper appreciation of our gifted musicians playful and subtle musical arrangements. Walking to ECD music on a regular basis during this time of social isolation is a great way to keep up your cheer and improve your stamina, coordination and musical sensitivity. Then when your dancing days return, you’ll be fit and ready to step out onto the floor. If you use an exercise bike, you can relieve some of the boredom by listening to cheerful English country dance tunes. ** Be extra careful when walking to music outside, especially in urban settings, as you are less able to hear traffic and street sounds that may signal imminent danger. ** For people who want to start making "Walking to ECD Music" playlists from their own CD recordings, I'm sharing my list of walkable tunes (in an online spreadsheet) sorted on beats per minute. This may motivate you to add more CDs to your collection so as to include tunes in your playlists with similar beats per minute. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
