Final Fantasy I is a JRPG released back in 1987, this however is a pixel re-release for PC, released in July, 2021. The game is Developed and Published by Square Enix. STORY: 20/20 Four friends turn up at a town just in time when the villagers are in need of heroes to save the world from darkness. A ruthless villain has kidnapped the Princess and you are tasked with saving her but in doing so you set in motion events that could see the destruction of the world by an entity known as Chaos. GRAPHICS: 15/20 Well, being the fact this game is meant to look pixelated it looks quite nice on small screens or in windowed mode but stretching the game out on a 2K/4K monitor makes it look a little to pixel. Square Enix has tried hard to bring back the charm of the originals and they kind of have but it still needs work, like the text and box still looks too modern, the the text looks stretched out. Another thing to point out is the use of modern graphics for backgrounds and also magic spell attacks, they look nice but again look WAY TOO pixelated on larger monitors. It feels like SE has mish-mashed all the different version of FFI into this version.. like the characters look and feel like they are from the NES, the backgrounds, houses, and magics feel like they are straight-up ripped from the PSP and scaled up to pixelate them, monsters look like they are from the Wonderswan version, it just don't match but its kind of odd cos it kind of work. I really would have liked to see a little less pixilation really. SOUND: 20/20 The sound is great, the rearranged tracks done for this version are fantastic. Sound effects all sound nice also, including magic spells, system sounds, and all the other bells and whistles this game has. I've had no issues with the sound as of yet so it's a high score for this one. GAMEPLAY: 10/20 As much as I really do like this game I just can't help but feel SE are passing the buck YET AGAIN on another one of their F.F. games. There's nothing new, they've removed everything (all the extras) that made this game much better on the many other versions. Why they just didn't port the PSP version is beyond me, though I suspect its all to do with money.. give it another 5/10 years and they'll release yet another version because they just refuse to release a definitive version that has everything in it, FMVs, all the extras, and so forth. The game is much more easier than I remember it being on the PSP, PS1, and the other versions i've played. The gameplay is real easy, choose your team, explore towns, advance the story, kill the bad guys, and so on, it's pretty much like all the other Final Fantasy games. This game also has a hidden mini-game you can access once you get the boat. SYSTEMS: 14/20 There's a class system where you can choose different characters, each have some type of basic addition if in your party, like the Thief makes it easier for you to escape battles. There's a save system, menu systems to navigate showing all different types of information such as character information, magic spells, equipment, and so forth. There's many shops to buy equipment, spells, and even items to use. There's a vehicle system that you get quite early on in the game too. OVER ALL: 79/100 So, do I recommend this game though..? ABSOLUTELY! it's worth the play because it's such a classic, even if it DOES have all the best content removed. IF you're still not too sure then play the PSP version instead.
