In this video I'll be upgrading the original 1605 ballscrews (16mm diameter, 5mm pitch) with 1610 ballscrews. The drive system on my CNC plasma cutting table is made up of NEMA 23 stepper motors directly connected to the ballscrews on the X and Y axes. The Z axis uses a NEMA17 stepper motor directly connected to a 1605 ballscrew. The recommended operating speed for these stepper motors is 100 - 500rpm, with a maximum speed of 1000rpm. With the original ballscrews operating the torch at 5000mm/min, the motor was running at 1000rpm, but the new ballscrews will see these motors now running at 500rpm....which is more in line with their recommended speed. Although I won't see any change in the way the table operates, having the stepper motors running within their recommended operating range, should ensure their longevity. Besides changing the ballscrews, 3 changes were needed within the electronics side of my table: 1. change the 'distance per rev' for both X and Y axes within the MyPlasm software 2. update the microstepping value within the MyPlasm software 3. Set the stepper driver unit's dip switches to reflect 1000 microsteps.
