General Electric's 44 ton model was targeted at Class 1 railroads with a view to reducing crew size on branchlines and small switching operations. According to then-current labor agreements, 44 tons was the maximum weight for a locomotive to operate without a fireman. Many were either purchased new or found their way onto various shortline railroads and tourist operations.
