ABOUT THE VIDEO: My friend, the director of Walk Right Through, Simon Ratigan, is my longest-running collaborator. To shoot this video, Simon came to my home in Cape Breton. He hadn’t seen where I now lived. There is something important about friends visiting your home, knowing where you are. It brings you closer together. When they leave, they now know where the brook is, they’ve been to the beach, and gone on your favourite walk. And so it was when we shot this. Simon loves nothing more than shooting stuff, making films. We had a couple of days to hang out so of course - we made a video. Some of the places most special to me are in it. Sacred Acre. My local beach. The Woodland Trail at Gampo Abbey. We shot for two days, getting as many magic moments as possible. When we thought there could be no more, going for our last shot, we found a long empty stretch of road above which the moon was rising and having got the shot we knew we were done and had what we needed. Thank you Simon for the amazing work you have done for me over the years that has allowed people to journey more deeply with my songs. ABOUT THE SONG: Walk Right Through is a story of a son and a father, and it’s also a story of a song - a song that speaks of the truth of our existence, so radical it is banned by society; and of a desire to sing this song, not to shy away from living in this truth, and of the pressure put on us by the powers that be to deny it. That's one way to read the narrative, if you want it. Feeling is everything. The truth of the song that must not be sung (“nothing’s ever gonna get you, nothing’s ever gonna blow you out, no-one loves you like I love you, you’re the me that is all around”) is that it inhabits everything everywhere. "And the dance went on, somehow we all got home, but now the wall is gone, we just walk right through…." In these lyrics above, I was trying in the most basic of phrases to express something very specific yet totally universal. What do you take from those lines? I'm genuinely interested. I think they have a truth in them. They came through me and resonated but I'm fascinated what others will think. Write in the comments if you like what they mean to you. Post fame, post top of the pops, post viral, post caring - As the bombs drop and the rule of law disappears and all manner of hideous possibilities for our species’ future are spoken of as if they were so much candy floss - who are we who choose to listen to truth in words and music and to continue to sing our songs as the water rises to the ceiling of this darkening room?" - John Lydon We are the ones who bring the songs. Thousands upon thousands of which will disappear without trace, like soldiers emerging from a trench and running into the guns. But we all know. We all know how it ends. One or two get through to the other side. One or two, 50, 60, 80 years later will still be alive, in people’s hearts, being played loud in people’s homes, being handed down to other humans. Meaning continues to emerge.
