Migrant rescue operation off coast of Libya

(5 Oct 2016) At least 33 people died on Tuesday trying to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean Sea from Libya. Twenty-nine of them were found by Spanish non-governmental organisation (NGO) Proactiva Open Arms in a single rubber boat after dying of asphyxia. Three further bodies were counted by the NGO on a wooden vessel that was rescued by the Italian navy on the brink of capsizing with almost 1-thousand people on board. A further body was found by coast guards. Proactiva Open Arms said they rescued some 1,846 migrants on Tuesday with the assistance of the Italian navy. They were found floating adrift in numerous vessels some miles (kilometres) from the Libyan coast.
